Director William Wyler agreed to return to films after his 1970 retirement and direct this film, providing Audrey Hepburn return as well after her 1967 retirement. Audrey agreed but only if the film was made in Rome. The producer disagreed and Milton Katselas was chosen to direct Liv Ullmann instead.
